Static Electricity

One of the most misunderstood forms of energy known to humans.

Static electricity is probably one of the most misunderstood forms of energy known to humans. It can be as great as a lightning strike, as simple as feeling the hair rise on your arm, or you might not even feel it at all.

We have over 30 years of experience in static electricity. We know how to detect it, what it is, how to make it, how to get rid of it, and even how to use it.

What Causes Static Electricity?

Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material. It is typically created when two materials come into contact and then separate, causing electrons to transfer from one material to the other. This is known as the triboelectric effect.

Common sources in industrial settings include moving belts, flowing liquids, plastic films, and the movement of people and equipment. Even a small static charge can damage sensitive electronics or create a fire or explosion hazard in the right conditions.

Why Static Control Matters

Uncontrolled static electricity can:

  • Damage sensitive electronic components and circuit boards.
  • Cause sparks that ignite flammable vapors, dust, or gases.
  • Disrupt production and cause product defects.
  • Create uncomfortable shocks for workers.

Proper static bonding and grounding are the most effective ways to control these risks.
